BRUEN’S INCONSISTENCY T 6 the bitter disappointment of James Bruen’s many compatriots and followers, his. golf went, from the brilliant to The very bad during the recent Irish open championship which A. Lees, of .Dore and Totley, won with an aggregate of 287. Those who were-watching Bruen on the first day, during his record round of 66, felt that he was going to make up for his' collapse in the British Open. But exactly the same thing happened, only in a worse degree. He played a disappointing round of 74, followed with a rather ragged 75 and finished disastrously in 81, hooking and slicing off the tee and being quite out of touch on the greens. In the British Open his qualifying rounds of 69 produced a standard of golf that has . seldom been bettered at 'St. Andrews. Yet in the championship proper his scores were 72, 75, 75, 76, a gradual fading into mediocrity. At the age of 19, however, lapses are not merely pardonable but natural. Consistency will come with experience, and then the best of Bruen, who has won the admiration of famous players, will prevail. I
