SHOT AT FARMER
WAHAROA INCIDENT LONG POLICE SEARCH (Special to the Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. The firing of a shot at a farmer while he was crossing his yard was the cause of considerable excitement in the Waharoa district, 1 Te Aroha. The settler, whose name has not been disclosed, is stated to have heard a voice call out. “Drop what you are carrying,” and a moment later a bullet sang past. The person who had fired the shot then made ofr. The Te Aroha and Matamata police were notified and search parties were organised. After a lengthy search a suspect was seen to enter a swamp on Mr. J. C. Calvert’.s property at Shaftesbury. The swamp was surrounded by police and settlers. A dog was sent in after the suspect, who gave himself up. The suspect, who proved to be a 16-year-old youth, was taken into custody by the Matamata police.
