COURAGE PRAISED
BERLIN TRIBUTE POLISH GARRISON WESTERPLATTE TAKEN GDYNIA IN RUINS PENINSULA RAZED (Reed. Sept. 8, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 7. The German War Ministry announced in Berlin to-day that the Polish garrison at Westerplatte had surrendered at 10.20 a.m. The Berlin communique pays tribute to the courage of the defenders. A report which yesterday reached Amsterdam said that Gdynia was in ruins and towns of the Hel Peninsula had been destroyed. Danzig had been under fire since Monday. A big ammunition dump near the mouth of the Vistula had been burning for three days. It is officially stated in Berlin that General Gosiorowski, the commander of the Seventh Polish Division, was taken prisoner at Luciabanya. Over 300 Slovak deserters crossed the frontier. They declared that hundreds who were called up had fled. Tne Hlinka Guards were watching the frontiers and shooting deserters, Berlin dispatches officially claimed yesterday that Cracow had fallen, though the Warsaw radio has denied the loss o£ the city.
The Germans admit that severe fighting occurred in ,the Lodz district and also west from Tarnow.
