GARBAGE DISPOSAL
SYDNEY’S NEW METHOD MADE INTO .FERTILISER A new process for the disposal of city refuse and household garbage by converting it into valuable manure, and po abolishing unsightly incinerators, was described by Mr. E. P. Nicholson, a Christchurch business man who returned a few days ago from Australia. He said he saw this orocess in application in North Sydney, where it was the accepted method of disposing of garbage, and he was most impressed by it. He said the refuse was mechanically sorted to remove metal objects, and was then inoculated with a certain type of bacteria, which in 20 hours reduced it to a clean, odourless, granulated compost manure, of the type gardeners referred to as humus. There was no smell or smoke or other nuisance emitted in the process. The process was able to deal with all ordinary garbage, from waste paper to dead dogs, provided it was of an organic nature. Australian sanitary and health authorities, he said, were profoundly impressed with this process.
