RACING CONTROL
SPORT IN POVERTY BAY CE NT ENN lAli HISTORY, TIJRF CLUB MEETING The control of racing in Poverty Bay was discussed by members of the Poverty Bay Turf Club at the annual meeting last evening. An interesting point of discussion was the advisability of compiling a centennial history of the club, and a report on this is to be received. Mr. F. Toler ton presided, over a large attendance of members. Moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the president said that subscriptions for the past year had shown a regrettable decrease, a similar position applying to training fees. A loss of £174 was shown on the working for the year. Training at the Park meant a slight loss and the elu 1 / at present was unable to put in a training track at the Maltaraka course. Mr. Tolerton appealed to all owners to have their horses trained in the Gisborne district. The motion was seconded by Mr. W. G. Shcrratl, who, like the president, expressed regret at the withdrawal of the 1 per cent totalisator turnover rebate to clubs. Mr. W. D. Morley commented on the increase in donations to the club, the president stressing that Mr. Morley. the treasurer, had played a big part in securing the increased donations. Officers were elected as follows: — President. Mr. F. Tolerton; re-elected; vice-president, Mr. W. G. Sherratt, icelected; committee, Messrs. F. W. Nolan, H. E. Bright, H. 11. Dods. T. Fraser, E. Centennial History A request.that a history of the sport in the district be compiled was received, it being suggested' that the information used be made a centennial elTori. It was contended by one of the writers,- Mr. W. Rutledge; that a wide interest, would be maintained in the history of racing in the district. A sample copy of biographical matter was handed to members. Speaking in support of the sugges*
tion, Mr. W. D. Morley said that the ■question could be incorporated in the matter being prepared as a centennial history of the district. The subject was fully discussed by members, it being decided that Mr. Rutledge should inquire into the cost of the project and also the possibility of compiling the necessary data. Thanks for the compliment paid 'by his re-election was expressed by the president, who assured members that he would work whole-heartedjy in the interests of the club. . H/Ir: Tolerton also paid a ■ complimentto . the work carried out by the vice-presi-dent. ' A suggestion that a drive lortpembership' be held amongst, lociil shopkeepers was offered by Mr; C. Brown, and it was. decided to carry out, this effort. ' ' Answering a question, the. chairman said that an allowance of £4 a horse was made to owners outside the district. /r-j.s
