INCREASE IN ENTRIES

WAIROA’S 1939 SHOW A. & P. SOCIETY’S REPORT ASSETS TOTAL £2314 (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. “The society’s annual Show was held on Wednesday, February 1, during carnival week, under ideal weather conditions. Comparing the entries with last year, the total was 2980, against 2497, an increase of 483, which is accounted for in the cobs and ponies, pigs, pigeons, dogs, industrial division, schools and dancing,” stated the president of the Wairoa ’County (Agricultural /'and Pastoral Society; Mr. A. T. Carroll, in his report to be presented at the annual meeting to-day. “A falling off in entries was noticeable in the following sections,” continues the report: “All horse sections, sheep and cattle, which, no doubt was attributable to the very unfavourable season, and other causes over which we have no control.” “Notwithstanding the falling off _in stock entries the Show was considered one of the best yet held, and Was a great success. As far as entries are concerned, it was a record for the society, and although the profit is not up to last year; it must be considered, under the circumstances, a highly satisfactory result. Comparing the figures with last year, receipts totalled £1274 Is 6d, against £1278 6s 9d, and exnenditure £lllß 8s lOd, compared with £IOBO 7s 4d, leaving a net balance of £155 12s Bd, against £197 18s lOd. “The committee expresses its keen appreciation to exhibitors, donors of special prizes and donations, and to all persons contributing to 'the success of the Show.

Fat Lamb Competition ‘The district fat lamb competition was again well patronised, the number of entries being up to previous years. To assist and encourage the competition, the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board donated £lO towards the prize fund, this being in addition to Messrs. Swift (N.Z.) Company’s donation. Our thanks are due to these organisations for their donations and also to the latter firm for the handling of the competition. The committee trust that members will again give their support and make this competition worthy of. the district.

"The committee has pleasure in again recording a further substantial increase in members’ subscriptions, the total being £491 6s, against last year’s total of £450 3s. The committee keenly appreciates the splendid ' support it receives from members, thus enabling it to continue with improvements to the grounds. With the object of maintaining and increasing C-his source of 'income, members are again asked to invite their friends to join the society. Members are reminded that junior members may be elected at the annual subscription of 10s Od, open to persons under 21 years of age, which entitles them to a member’s ticket and a lady’s ticket, also reduced entry fees. Your committee Would also like to draw the attention of members of 'the Young Farmers’ Club of the advisability of joining up as members, and thus taking their place in the management of the affairs of the society.

Improvements to Grounds "During the past year,” added the report, “£319 9s 8d was spent on improvements to the grounds, the main items being the completion of the sheep yards, erecting new stands and shelving in the produce shed, and other minor improvements. The committee was able to carry out the above work by the balance carried forward from the 1938 sports meeting and revenue received from increased membership. It is the intention of the committee to carry out further improvements as funds permit. "The sports fixture was held on Friday, February 3, and although there were counter-attractions in town the’ same day, the result was very gratifying, and our thanks are due to the organiser, secretary, and committee for the result achieved. “From a perusal of the balance sheet and statement of accounts it will be seen that the society has experienced a very satisfactory year, and taking everything into consideration, members are to be congratulated. It must be borne in mind, however, that for a number of years the society has been most fortunate with the weather, and it will be realised that any setback sin gate receipts, may be of serious consequence, as owing to increased costs it is becoming more difficult each year to make ends meet. It is to be hoped, however, that with the opening of the railway and the service provided by the department, the society will reap the 'benefit at future shows. After writing down buildings and improvements £65 9s Bd, the assets of the society total £2314 14s
