MUTTON BIRD SHORTAGE

POOR SEASON REPORTED An acute shortage of mutton birds, the worst which fishmongers can remember for many years, is at present being experienced in Christchurch. The majority of the shops are right out of supplies, only a few of the larger ones having 'birds left in stock. Their supplies, however, are now nearlv exhausted. Usually supplies ordered at the beginning of the- season in May are sufficient to last until the next season, but this year shops were able to secure only half their usual quo.ta. Consequently there was a great demand on the markets. Bad weather at Stewart Island and increased demand for the birds this year are thought to have caused the shortage, which is not only bging experienced in Christchurch but also throughout the whole of New Zealand.
