SUNK INTO BURE
MISHAP TO VISITORS ALARMING EXPERIENCE IvAITI BEACH OCCURRENCE To sink suddenly deeply into thick dark papa soil was the alarming experience of two lady visitors to Gisborne when they were walking around the coastline on Kaiti Beach last Sunday. The visitors were prevented by the tide from clambering over a small headland pointing out to sea. To get past this point the ladies decided to climb up a small dark bank, but, after going a few yards the leading lady suddenly sank through the clay to her knees. Her companion went to her assistance tout she, too, went through the crust of the soil and sank to her hips. Both were able to struggle out of the mire and walked back to some houses on the 'beach, the * substance into which they had sunk drying very fast on their clothing. They were able to clean up somewhat at one of the houses and later returned to town. From inquiries made, it was learned that the substance into which the i ladies sank was pa-pa, and it was learned also that this pair were not the first persons to undergo this alarming experience at this spot.
