Old Ex-Employee A motion of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr. E. McGirr was carried by the Gisborne Borough Council last night. The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., stated that Mr. McGirr had been in the council’s cm-' oloy for 23 years before Bis retirement on superannuation. Record Slaughtering During the past month 2023 sheep were slaughtered at the Gisborne abattoirs, and when this was reported to the Borough Council’s meeting last night Cr. H. H. De Costa stated that this was a record for the month Other stock slaughtered during the month was: —Bullocks, 8; heifers, 14; cows, 3GG; lambs, 31; calves, 40; pigs. 324.
Life Order Ignored Before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M.. in the Police Court 'in Opotiki yesterday a Maori, Taylor Tai, was charged with procuring liquor while prohibited. It was slated by the police that Tai was the subject of a life prohibition order made in October, 1919. The accused was convicted and fined £2 and costs. —Special.
Large Hospitals The opinion that hospitals should not be allowed to grow to enormous dimensions was expressed by the Hon. H. Fitz Simmons, Minister of Health in New South Wales, who passed through Auckland’ a few days ago after a visit to various countries to study hospital developments. The absolute limit for a general hospital, he said, should be 1000 beds. The ideal unit was 700 beds, including public, private and intermediate blocks and with a block for obstetrics.
Placed Under Supervision Charges of breaking and entering were preferred against a 15-year-old Maori tooy who appeared before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Children’s Court in Opotiki yesterday. It was stated by the police that the accused had entered a dwelling on three occasions, stealing £2 10s in cash, a wristlet watch valued at £l, and a bottle of gin valued at 16s. The charges arose but of a complaint received from a householder that her house had been broken into on five occasions, the offences being traced tc the accused. The boy was placed under the supervision of the child welfare officer for 12 months, and was ordered io make restitution amounting to £3 6s.—Special.
