BLOMFIELD AGAIN
MATCH WITH MARTINEZ 0 WRESTLING IN GISBORNE TEAM FOR HAWKE’S BAY New Zealand’s greatest wrestling draw-card, “Lofty” Blomfield, will make his second Gisborne appearance of the season on Saturday night, when he will meet the colourful Spanish wrestler, Ignacio Martinez, in a professional bout in the Opera House. Blomfield is the busiest wrestler in the country and is in demand by all New Zealand associations. He needs little introduction to Gisborne followers of the mat sport and, in all his previous bouts in Gisborne, he has given the “fans” a good run for their money. His octopus clamp is said to be the most deadly hold in modern wrestling and, once truly applied, is a sure fall-getter. Blomfield is ill excellent training as he is pointing for an Empire title bout with Earl MeCready and a win over the Spaniard would add considerably to the New Zealander’s claims for a title bout. Martinez Class Wrestler Martinez arrived in New Zealand unheralded and unsung, but it was not long before he had earned the reputation of being one of the best men in the sport in the Dominion. A beautifully moulded wrestler of outstanding physique, Martinez is a great wrestler and is the type who will make Blomfield work hard all the way. The Spaniard has built up a good record while in New Zealand land has taken part in bouts which are among the highlights of a very successful season. Gisborne wrestling enthusiasts are fortunate in that they now have the opportunity of seeing Martinez in action against the New Zealand title-holder.
On the same evening as the professional bout is being staged a team of 'hive Gisborne amateurs will visit Hastings for the Hawke’s Bay amateur championships. The men selected are A. Campbell, heavyweight, H. Duckworth, welterweight, and G. Geddes, lightweight. All three boys selected are very capable performers and it is claimed for Duckworth that he is one of the best amateurs in the Dominion. The calibre of all three wrestlers is well known and confidence is felt in their ability to perform with distinction at the title meeting. A. Read and M. Smale, two other leading amateurs, are unavailable for the visit to Hawke's Bay.
