In the Davis Cup challenge round, America won both the first day s singles matches. R. L. Riggs defeated J, Bromwich, o—4, C —o. 7 —5, and F. Parker defeated A. K. Quist, 6—3, 2—6, 6—4, I—6, 7—5.
ißiggs volleyed with fiendish skill and blasted Bromwich from the court. The Australian recovered at the be-
ginning of the third set, and led 4 —o, but the American won the next three. Bromwich took the eighth, and the American the last four in a row. Quist, after an indifferent beginning, recovered finely to win the second set. After a comparatively even third he exploited lobs and drop shots to take
the fourth. The final set was an exciting struggle, the Australian hammering Parker’s forehand with 1 success and the latter winning points with superb placements.
