The New Zealand horse Beau Vite opened his account in Australia on Saturday by winning the Canterbury Stakes, beating both Gold Rod and Brazant, in the good time of 1.12 J for six furlongs. The other visiting New Zealand horse, Paddy the Rip, weakened in the run home in the Ashbury Handicap or one mile and a furlong, which was won by Rathlin in the course record time of 1.524. Results: — Canterbury Stakes, of £500; 6 furlongs.—Beau Vite, 3.0 (Cook), 1; Gold Rod, 9.2 (McCarten), 2; Brazant, 9.2 (Coutts), 3. Six started. A length; three lengths. Time, 1.125. Canterbury Guineas, of £525; 1 mile and 1 furlong.—Bonny Loch, 8.5 (Cook) ,1; Marenge, 8.5 (McCarten), 2; Dashing Cavalier, 8.5 (Coutts), 3. Six started. A head; a neck. Time, 1.53, a race record. W. Cook, who rode Beau Vite, is confident that the colt will win the A.J.C. Derby. “No colt I have ridden so impressed me as a prospective Derby winner,” he said. J. T. Jamieson’s stable is throwing down the gauntlet to Defaulter. it intends, with High Caste, to tackle the New Zealander in the Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick next Saturday.
