POLES REFUSE MEDIATION

OFFER BY MUSSOLINI ‘‘DOUBLY UNACCEPTABLE” NO ACTION BY ITALY (Reed. Sept. 2, 1.20 p.m.) LONDON. Sept. 1. The Paris correspondent of tire British United Press says that the Italian Ambassador informed the French Foreign Minister, M. Bonnet, that Signor Mussolini had offered to mediate between Germany and Poland, proposing a five-Power conference. The highest Polish diplomatic circles declare that II Duce’s intervention, is inacceptable. “It would be inacceptable in peace time and doubly so now ,the Germans are invading Poland and bombing cities from the air,” stated a spokesman.

At Paris M. Bonnet received the Italian Ambassador and handed over France’s reply to the Italian ofTcr of mediation.

\A copy of the French reply was also sent to the French Ambassador at Rome.

According to a report from New York, the Rome correspondent of the United Press of America says that HenHitler telegraphed to Signor Mussolini stating that he does not at this time require Italian military aid. This is interpreted ns the German intention to localise the conflict between Germany and Poland. The same correspondent says that it is officially announced that the council of Ministers has decided to refrain from any military initiative in the conflict between Germany and Poland.
