MORE BIRTHS, LESS DEATHS
(Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day
There were 28 births in the Wairoa district during August, compared with 16 for the corresponding month last year, while the deaths totalled six, compared wim seven. Four marriage notices were issued by the registrar, the same number also being issued in August, 1938. No marriages were performed by the registrar during the month, as against two last year.
Until the end of August, the total number of births "for the year was 153, compa.ed with 114 for the same period last year, while the deaths registered numbered 48, as against 85, the apparently large decrease this year being accounted for to a certain extent by the victims of the Kopuawhara tragedy appearing in the April statistics of last year. Forty marriage notices were issued, which shows an increase of seven on those issued for the first ejght months of last year. The number of marriages performed by the registrar for the year to date was seven as against two for the corresponding period in 1938.
