INCREASE IN BIRTHS AUGUST FIGURES MARRIAGE NOTICES HIGHER An increase in births and marriage notices, in comparison with the return for the corresponding month last year, is shown in the vital statistics for August, 193 i). Last month the births registered were the lowest on record since October, 1934, but this month they have again taken an upward trend and Id more were registered this month than last. The deaths show a decrease when compared with the figure for the same month last year, but marriage notices and marriages by the registrar are both higher for August of this year. Total figures for the year to date show that, in comparison with the same period last year, births and marriage notices have increased, deaths and marriages by the registrar being .slightly less. The comparative figures for the month are as follows, the figures for August last year being shown in parenthesis.—Births, 42 (38); deaths, 23 (25): marriage notices, 24 (20); marriages by registrar, 8 (5).

In comparison, the total returns are as follows:—Births, 308 (285); deaths, 143 (170); marriage notices, 157 (143); marriages by registrar, 33 (31). The figures shown first are for the present year, up to the end of August..
