Charged with carrying on business as a second-hand dealer without a license, Joseph Sessine, aged 24, was convicted -and discharged by Mr. J. I-I. Luxford. S.M., at the monthly sitting of the Wairoa Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The defendant pleaded not guilty. Sergeant D. Clark stated that the case had been brought before the court in the hope that it would be given publicity and that it would act as a warning.

He said that during some inquiries for missing bicycles it was learned ihat the defendant was purchasing old parts and making them up into machines which he sold. Constable A. McLellan read a statement made by defendant in which he stated that when he was not working he purchased old bicycles and parts, which .he made up into bicycles and sold, getting between £2 and £2 10s each for the machines. In evidence the -defendant said that what fie purchased was only rubbish which other people had no use for, and generally it was given to him.

The magistrate told the defendant that he would- be convicted and discharged, but that no penalty would be imposed. However, if he wished to carry on with this business, he must see the -police and make application for a license.
