BOXING PROMOTION
BOUT FOR SEPTEMBER 26
LEADING PROFESSIONALS SPECIAL FOR 1). I!FLAKY' At a meeting of the committee of the Gisborne Boxing Association, held yesterday, it was decided to hold the next tournament in Gisborne on September 2(i. Arrangements are already in hand for the engaging of two leading professional welterweights, and endeavours also will be made to stage a special Ground amateur bout, with Darcy lieeney and an outside opponent. A long period has elapsed since the last contest held here, but this was due to the fact that the demands of the professionals were beyond what the association was prepared to pay. If has been found from experience that professionals are easier to deal with after the New Zealand amateur championships are over.
Amongst the recommendations to be placed before the annual conference of the New Zealand Boxing Association is one from the council, that the district associations seriously consider promoting boxing throughout the summer months, it being pointed out, for instance, that in Australia, where conditions are a gcod deal mor e trying than they are in the Dominion the busiest boxing period is during the summer months. “The public are invited by the executive of the association to see the final work-outs next week of the Gisborne representatives to the New Zealand championships —D. Heeney and T. Baty. Heeney and Baty would like as many local boys as possible to assist in sparring practice, and the bigger the variety the better.
