BRITISH WOOL PURCHASES
AGREEMENT MOVE LARGE PART OF CLIP CANBERRA, Aug. 21. It is reliably reported that negotiations were opened between the British and Commonwealth Governments recently for an agreement, by which Britain would buy large quantities of the Australian wool from the current clip. Although details of the proposal are being kept secret, it is stated in wellinformed quarters that if it was completed, the whole of the clip not required by Australian mills would be bought by Britain. Federal Ministers were reticent when questioned to-night, but it is admitted that over the last month there has been considerable correspondences between the two countries. The feeling in Canberra is that developments in Europe this week will accelerate discussions, and if the international situation remains grave an agreement is likely to be concluded shortly.
Should the agreement be made, some form of control and realisation organisation would have to be established to work on the lines that the British Australian Wool Realisation Association operated during the Great War.
