NEGOTIATION APPEALS
POPE’S ENDORSEMENT
GRATITUDE OF REICH
(Reed. Aug. 31, 2.10 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 30,
The Rome correspondent of The Times says that the Pope has telegraphed to President Roosevelt at length endorsing the appeals for negotiation in the crisis. He said that the appeals should toe encouraged and fostered. The Italian Government was keeping ‘in the closest contact with the Pope. A message from New York states that King Victor Emanuel -of Italy-has cabled to President Roosevelt stating that he has transmitted Mr. Roosevelt’s message to the Italian Government, and adding that Italy was doing “whatever is possible to bring about a peace with justice.” A message from Brussels states that the German Ambassador called on King Leopold and expressed the Reich’s “profound gratitude” for the offer made by Queen Wilhelmina of Holland and King Leopold to mediate in the German-Polish problem.
