P.B. HEALTH CAMP

TEMPORARY QUARTERS NEW BUILDING FOR 1940 MEMORIAL FUND GRANT PLANS AND SITE APPROVED Advice that a grant of a substantial sum for the foundation of a permanent health camp in Gisborne has been recommended by the advissory board of the King George V memorial fund was received at a meeting of the Poverty Bay Health Camp Committee, held on Wednesday evening. The amount was disclosed to the committee, with a request that it should not be published until the trustees of the fund had acted on the recommendation.

Recently the committee forwarded plans for the proposed camp buildings, -these plans having been drawn in accordance with a series of suggestions made by the advisory board following the submission of preliminary sketches covering the district’s needs. The new plans include everything in the way of labour-reducing equipment that, the committee could devise, and it is anticipated that when established, the permanent camp will rival the best in New Zealand for economy of operation and suitability of site.

Minister’s Warm Approval

The site chosen is on the Makaraka Domain, this proposal having been warmly approved by the Minister of Lands, under Whose control the park was placed some years ago. The Minister, the Hon. F. Langstone, commented that he could conceive :no more fitting site,, and no more fitting use Ifor a portion of the domain, than was contemplated by the district ■ommittee.

For the approaching season, the committee has secured once again the use of the old St. Helen’s Home buildings in Childers road, which were used during the past two seasons, and which provide fairly satisfactory accommodation for the children, the camp officers, and for domestic staff. The camp will open on November 10, and three groups of approximately 20 children will be dealt with during the season, which .vill extend for 18 weeks.

Application is being made to the Health Department for the services of a qualified matron for , the camp, ,ind to the Education Department for :i teacher, on the lines of previous seasons.

In due course the committee will launch an appeal for assistance in maintaining the children in the district camp, and having in mind the experience of earlier seasons, it feels mnfident that the expense of management will be met by the generosity if the public.
