UNIVERSAL TRAINING
DOMINION’S MAN-POWER EX-SERVICEMEN'S PLEA (Por Pross Association.) ASHBURTON, this day. A meeting of 80 returned soldiers, with one dissentient, carried a resolution urging tiie introduction of some form of universal training for young men. but on the way they heard the roar of approaching water. They had scarcely time to scramble to higher ground when a huge wave of black water nearly lO.ft. high swept down the gulch carrying all before it. This, they afterwards realised, was the overflow after an eruption of the geyser.
When they returned an account was written of their experiences, and this attracted immediate attention. .Mr. T. E. Donne, who was then in charge of the Tourist ’ Department, proceeded at cuce to Rotorua, and, with Guide Warto'rick, and ' Sophia, followed the same route.: He was so impressed that he immediately had suitable boats' built and organised what is now known as the round trip.
