PRE-WAR VOLUNTEERS
LATE. COL. SPRAGG’S PART GISBORNE MOUNTEDS Colonel C. R. Spragg, whose death occurred in Auckland yesterday, as recorded on page 15, was prominent in the volunteer movement in Gisborne before the Great War. He was associated for many years with the volunteer movement, and joined the did E.C.M.R. as a sergeant. Subsequently he took over the control of the local cadet corps With the rank of captain, and later rejoined the E.C.M.R. as troop leader with the rank of lieutenant. Afterwards he passed his examination for the rank of captain, and shortly after the outbreak of war left Gisborne with the first draft of mounted men from this district, joining the Wellington Mounted Regiment.
Prior to enlisting, he held the position of manager of the Gisborne abattoirs.
