Local bodies on the East Coast of the North Island, who desire to carry out a survey regarding the probable demand for electric power find that they have no authority to spend money for this purpose. Mr. A. G. Hultquist (Lab., Bay of Plenty), in an urgent question to the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R, Semple, in the House of Representatives yesterday reminded Mr. Semple of his promise to give the jnatter consideration, suggesting that legislation be passed this session. Mr. Semple replied that he had promised to have the matter investigated and arrange for legislation which was now under consideration.
Under existing legislation, local bodies of areas wishing to come within the Poverty Bay. ElectricPower Board's power district must bear the cost of preliminary steps. There is .provision in the legislation, however, for the payment of certain expenses out of any loan moneys raised as a result of these steps. A tentative estimate of the preliminary costs, given by executive officers of the board in 1937, was £SOO. It is probable, however, that the cost would be higher now.
