Bought from Maoris

When the site of Wellington and the surrounding lands were bought from the Maoris by the New Zealand Company, the two chiefs who negotiated the sale were. Te Pum, of Petone, and Wharepouri, of Ngahauranga. When the latter died, the natives, following the usual practice, erected a memorial to him by upending a war canoe in the ground, leaving half of it exposed. That memorial existed in living memory, but |has long since disappeared. Mr. A. N. Tail, _ Greytown, has forwarded a suggestion to the Wellington Provincial Centennial Council that a memorial to this great friend of the white, man should be erected in Ngahauranga Gorge. The letter has been forwarded to the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple.
