EASTERN’S BIG LEAD

PROBABLE FINALISTS

YESTERDAY’S RESULTS „ (Per Press Association.) BLENHEIM, this day. With one day remaining of section play in the Dominion women’s hockey championship. Eastern, holders of the K Cup for the past five years, is in a virtually unassailable position in section B. Provided they are not beaten to-day, they are certain to be one of the finalists l’or Saturday.

In section A, Ashburton, runner-up last year, and Canterbury, who have been third for the past three years, are on terms and their meeting today will decide the section honours. Sectional points to date, with two points for a win and one for a draw, are:—

Section A.—Ashburton, 6; Canterbury, 6; Feilding, 4; Marlborough A, 4; Auckland, 3; Poverty Bay, 1. Section B.—Eastern, 8; Wellington, 6; Wairarapa, 5; Wanganui, 5; Southland 0; Marlborough B, 0. Grounds Under Water After a thunderstorm and heavy rain in the early hours of yesterday morning the grounds were under water, but pumping operations, hot sunshine and a drying wind effected a marvellous recovery before the time for play and conditions again were ideal. Eastern are the only team at the tournament so far to win all matches. In defeating their provincial sisters, Southland, by nine goals to nil, they brought their total of goals to 29, while keeping their own net intact. Two other decisive wins in section B were gained by Wanganui and Wellington, who registered victories by seven goals to nil and five goals to nil. respectively. Another highscoring game saw Ashburton secure the verdict Iby eight goals to one. Marlborough A figured in a boilover, going down to Auckland, who have gone with a late run. Results: Section A Canterbury 3 d. Feilding 2. Auckland 1 d. Marlborough 0. Ashburton 8 d. Poverty Bay 1.

Section 15 Eastern 9 d. Southland 0. Wellington 5 d. Wairflrapa 0. Wanganui 7 d. Marlborough B, 0.

POVERTY BAY’S DEFEAT

SIX GOALS FIRST HALF (Special to the Herald.) BLENHEIM, Ibis day. Windy conditions prevailed when Ashburton defeated Poverty Bay by eight goals to nil yesterday. Poverty Bay were outclassed in the first half when the score was six nil. Changing over, Poverty Bay's play improved, the forward line working better, and 15 minutes passed before Ashburton scored again. Poverty Bay attacked for .some time before the close of the game, and Mrs. Neilson scored just on time.

Section play will conclude to-day, when Poverty Bay will meet Auckland at 1.30 p.m.
