STAND WITH BRITAIN
AUSTRALIA DETERMINED NEGOTIATION FAVOURED (Reed. Aug. 28, 1 p.m.) CANBERRA, Aug. 28. The Prime Minister of Australia, Mr. R. G. Menzies, said that the view of the Commonwealth Goyernment on the international situation has been placed before the British Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chamberlain. It is authoritatively stated- that the Commonwealth Government has expressed the view -that every effort should be made to -achieve- a settlement by negotiation, but if Britain were forced into war Australia would stand with her.
Although the official cables received by the Federal Ministers at the week-end: presented a brighter view of the international situation, the defence measures have been intensified as a precautionary measure. Cable messages have been sent recalling to Australia the First Naval Member, Sir Ragnar Colvin, the Chief of the General Staff, MajorGeneral Lavarack, and the AdjutantGeneral, Colonel E. K. Smart.
