Notifiable Disease One case of notifiable disease, bacillary dysentery, was reported in :he East Cape health district for the week ended at noon yesterday. There were no deaths from notifiable disease during the week.
Remand Granted * Charged with the theft of a bicycle, the property of Winiata Moeau, at Makaraka on August 5, Alfred George Goodall, aged 19, appeared before Messrs. C. Blackburn and E. Harris, J.Ps., in the Police Court this morning. On the application of Detective--Sergeant R. H. Waterson, the Bench granted a remand until Friday. Gift to Cook Hospital
On behalf of herself and 1 Mr. W. Barrington Miller, Mrs. G. E. Bayly •vrote to tlie Cook Hospital Board, in a letter received at yesterday’s meeting, offering to donate a marble staitue to the hospital. The managingsecretary, Mr. C. A. Harries, reported that the gift was a handsome piece of statuary. The board voted its thanks to Mrs. Bayly and Mr. Millej’.
Gisborne-Motuhora Railway The railways working account shows that the four weeks’ operations on the Gisborne-Motuhora line for the period ended July 22 produced a total revenue of £2190, compared with £2213 for the corresponding period last year. The expenditure was £2521, as against £2380 for the four weeks in 1938, and the deficit on the operations was £331, compared with a deficit of £167 for 1938. Car Sheds a Wheel When the left-hand rear wheel came off their car when they were travelling on the Havelock road, the vehicle ran into a ditch and crashed into a post, with the result that Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Clarkson, well-known residents of Havelock North, were admitted to hospital. Mrs. Clarkson was treated for a fractured arm, bruises and shock; Mr. Clarkson for bruises, shock and a severe shaking. Diamond-back Moth Investigations made by Mr. D. H. Todd, of the Cawthron Institute, show that the white butterfly pest in Hawke’s Bay is generally under control, but that the control of tire diamond-back moth is one of the chief problems now facing entomologists in New Zealand. It is probable that the work of investigating the diamondback moth will be continued in Hawke’s Bay this summer.
iVeek’s Holiday Lost One of the effects of a recent award covering domestic workers in hospitals will be that Cook Hospital employees will enjoy only one week’s holiday per annum, instead of two weeks as recently. The attention of the board having been drawn to this fact by Mr. C. A. Harries, managingsecretary, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P.. expressed the- opinion ithat the board should hot penalise its employees by cutting J down their holidays. The chairman, Mr. M. T. Trafford, held .hat the employees must take the award as it stood, and, on a motion which Mr. Coleman submitted, to the effect that the foriinigbt’s holiday be continued, a majority of the board supported the chairman. Mesdames A. E. Beer and E. R. Scott voted with Mr. Coleman.
Floor Coverings at Hospital Members of the Cook Hospital Board ait the meeting yesterday afternoon 'inspected specimen strips of floor-coverings designed to reduce the noise of traffic in the corridors. Later, discussing the tenders of two firms for the covering of the floors, the chairman, Mr. M. T. Trafford, moved that the board- accept the tender of Messrs. Redpath, Limited, at £355. Mrs. A. E. Beer seconded the motion, but. Mr. H. J. F. Tombleson opposed it on the ground l that neither of the coverings seen gave the desired effect of reducing the noise of traffic. Messrs. H. Adlair and D. W. Coleman, M.P., also opposed l it, the latter moving that the decision be deferred l until after the chairman’s return from Wellington, during which time an inspection could be made of other materials. This motion found general support.
