WILD RUBBER

KENYA COAST SUPPLIES

MOMBASA, July 5. The opening of a shoe factory at Mombasa has drawn attention to the supplies of wild rubber on the Kenya Coast. It is thought that they might be made available .for the shoe industry. Thirty years ago thousands of acres were planted with rubber along the coast, but the scheme came to nothing. Wild offshoots of this cultivation flourish in the Tana and Lamu areas. It is believed that these forests could yield a product which could be blended with high grade rubber from India and Uganda.

Most of the land on which the rubber grows is the property of the Crown, to which the land reverted after the plantations were given up during the rubber slump.
