BABY FALLS INTO PIT

CONSCIOUS AFTER. DROP SYDNEY, Aug. 11. John Shepherd, aged 19 months, fell 60ft. into a brick pit adjoining his home in Yabsley Avenue, AshUUry, yesterday, and escaped with concussion, a fractured leg, and lacerations to the face. It is believed that the child crawled through the fence from the yard of its home, and then wandered to the edge of the pit. Several men were working in the pit, and they saw the boy as he hurtled over the top. He fell on to a ledge about 30ft. from the bottom, and then rolled down to near the workmen. When picked up the child was still conscious. The men carried it to the top of the pit, and the Western Suburbs Ambulance, after rendering first aid, took it to the Western Suburbs Hospital. The workmen who saw the accident consider it remarkable that the child was not killed.
