FOURTEENTH TIME

DAVIS CUP PINAL AUSTRAL!A QUALIFIES DEFEAT OF YUGOSLAVIA (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) ('Reed. August 28, Noon.) NEW YORK, August 27. In the Davis Cup inter-zone final between Australia and Yugoslavia, Bromwich defeated Mitie, 6 —l, C —3, 6—2, and Quist defeated Kukuljevic, 6—2, 6—3, 6—4. Although Bromwich played indifferently at times, he was able to win easily, assisted by Mitic’s re* pealed errors. Bromwich’s win puts Australia into the Davis Cup challenge round for the fourteenth time. There was some very mediocre tennis in t.h e match between Quist and Kuguljevic. Quist was Obviously disappointed, since he had hoped io play Puncec. The latter frankly explained: —“Coming over in the boat, we expected to be beaten s—o. We therefore planned to play Kukuljevic and Palada in the last matches, so when we lost the decisive match we decided to play Kukuljevic instead of me. I have a good grass court rating, and do not want to risk losing it." The Boston Transcript sports editor, commenting on the change, said it was a poor display of sportsmanship, as under the circumstances there was a chance that the match would have a bearing on the world’s No. 1 ranking.
