BADMINTON CHAMPIONS
TWO NEW TITLE-HOLDERS
LEWIS WINS MEN’S SINGLES WOMEN’S TO MISS KERR (Per Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. Two new title-holders were found at the New Zealand badminton championships, which concluded in New Plymouth on Saturday night. R. H. Lewis, Auckland, won the men’s singles, in which he was run-ner-up last year, and Miss M. Kerr, Winton, won the women’s singles. The holder, Miss N. Fleming, Wellington, was unable to compete on account of injuries.
Apart from the men's singles, _ the finals were disappointing, the titleholders going through comfortably in straight sets, though there were good rallies in every match. A feature of the tournament was the way in which the trophies were spread, few players securing more than one. Winners of Finals Results of A grade finals were:— Men’s Singles: R. Lewis, Auckland, beat J. Spedding, New Plymouth, 15—11, B—ls, 15—12. Women’s Singles: Miss M. Kerr, Otago, beat Miss F. Fernie, Wellington, 11 —8, 11—1. Men’s Doubles: P. Hawksworth, Wairarapa, and G. A. Pearce, Wellington, beat C. L. Sheerin, Palmerston North, and J. J. Payton, Wairarapa, 15—6, 15 —4. Women’s Doubles: Mrs. Hawksworth and Miss Kerr beat Misses J. Ramsay and Wade, Auckland, 15— 5, 15 —6. Combined Doubles: Hawksworth and Mrs. Hawksworth beat Pearce and Miss Kerr, 15—5, 15—3. Lower grade championship winners were: — B Grade: Men’s Singles—D. Moginie, New Plymouth. Women’s Singles—Miss Babbage, Wanganui. Men’s Doubles. —Purser and Goulding, New Pylmouth. Women’s Doubles.—Misses Jenkins and Lassen, Hastings. Combined Doubles.— Cann and Miss Cox, Hamilton. C Grade: Men’s Singles.—Sissons, Wellington. Women’s Singles.- —Miss J. Hunter, Tarurutangi. Men’s Doubles: Sissons and Beckett Wellington. Women’s Doubles: Misses Whitwell and Mitchell, New Plymouth. Combined Doubles—Shepherd and Miss Faine, Stratford. Teams From Overseas An invitation will be issued to Australia to send a badminton team to the Dominion next year by the New Zealand Badminton Federation, the management committee of the federation being recommended to do so by the half-yearly meeting of the Dominion council in New Plymouth on Saturday. Mr. D. O. Whyte outlined tentative itineraries for the tour of the Australian team and of the English team, which also will visit New Zealand next year. PLAY AT BARTLETTS GISBORNE DEFEATED The Gisiborne Badminton Club played a return match with the Bartletts club last week, Bartlet'ts winning by nine games to three and 151 points to 140. Combined Doubles. —Harrison and Miss Johnstone lost to Clanachan and Mrs. Cameron, 13-15: Niven and (Miss Redgrave lost to Walters and Mrs. Clanachan, 11-15; Fraser and Miss Henshaw lost to Muir and Miss Bourke, 10-15; Knopwood and Miss Bennett lost to Carswell and Miss E. French, 10-15; De Costa and Miss Thompson lost to Cameron and Miss White-ford, 8-15; Dixon and Mrs. Walters lost to Grieve and Miss J. French, 4-15.
