PARISHIONERS’ MEETING
WORK OF LADIES’ GUILD

(Herald Correspondent.) There was a fair attendance at the annual meeting of parishioners of the Te Karaka parochial district held in the Parish (Hall, Te Karaka, pn Thursday night, the vicar, the Rev. J. D. G. Hodgson, presiding. In his report, the vicar stated that there had been a slight increase at communion, but the position was still very unsatisfactory. • The Bible classes in schools had been extended to Matawai, and the classes in Te Karaka, Puha, Waipaoa, Whatalutu and Motu were continued.
Special mention was made by the vicar of the efforts of St. John’s Ladies’ Guild in guaranteeing the payment of the loan necessary to paint and repair the church, parish hall and vicarage.
The complete staff of four Sunday schools was lost within four months. Miss Shirley Luttrell, who had given valuable assistance in St. John’s Sunday School, had resigned on her removal to Wellington, and Miss Edith Hodge, after 11 years of faithful service, resigned in May to take up work at Whangara. Mrs. Moughton left Matawai for Te Puke. These losses were disastrous, but 'With the help of Mrs. Smith, Matawai, and Miss Rita McCauley, it was hoped to retrieve the position as soon as possible Women’s Guild. Efforts
The report submitted by Miss B. C. Orr, hon. secretary of the St. John’s Ladies' Guild, stated that the car debt had been reduced by the guild by £57 10s, while £5 had been given to missions and £1 to Anzac Day, in addition to gift parcels sent to 'homes and missions. The church, hall and Vicarage renovation loan instalments were being met by the guild at the rate of £lO 10s 8d pelhalf year. The vicar reappointed Mr. J. C. Appleton as clergyman’s warden, and Mr. L. H. L. Maclean was reelected people’s warden unanimously. The members of the retiring vestry were also re-elected without opposition, namely Messrs. A. M. Newton, A D. N. Manuel, R. D. Dyrnock, E. T. Stone, P. M. Howard, B. R. Fitzgerald, and Col. C. C. Dowding.
Vicar’s Activities
Reference was made to the improvement to the church through the completion of the lining. Thanks were expressed to the vicar for this work, as well as for the lining of the vestry which lie carried out himself. A- vote of thanks to the ladies’ guilds. St John’s, Te Karaka, St. Paul's, Motu, and St. Mary’s, Matawai, was passed with acclamation, the churchwardens pointing out that in addition to the splendid financial help given by these bodies a great deal of work was done by them in the care and upkeep of their respective churches and in supporting other diocesan activities.
A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded the vicar for his untiring and efficient work during the year.
