NEW LEADER ELECTED (blue. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Rccd. Aug. 26, 9 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 24. The Salvation Army has elected Commissioner George L. Carpenter, of Canada, who was' born in Aus.raiia, as its new general.
The final ballot resulted in Commissioner Carpenter 35 votes, Commissioner Brarmvell Booth 8 votes, Commissioner Orsborh C voles. There vvere two blanks.

Demand for Electricity The sales of current for the four months of the financial year completed on duly 31 were reported on by the managing-secretary as under: Lighting, £9071 (1938, £9408); heating and cooking, £8027 (£7385); watermating, C 2331 (£2237); and power, £2025 (£2711); total, £23,754 (£21,714). The engineer reported that the maximum half-hourly demand on the Public Works Department amounted '» 3508 k.v.a., as against 2400 k.v.a. for July, 1938. The maximum halfhourly demand on the system was 3810 k.v.a., comparing with 3348 k.v.a. in July last. During the month the hoard purchased 1,504,000 units, and generated 07,000 units, the total showing an hJereasc of 14.4 per cent cm the figures’for last July. The only interruptions to supply were made by arrangement with the Public Works Department in connection with the aerodrome cable job. The report was ad'opted.
