PROFIT OF £10,596 MADE

COMMERCIAL STATIONS

(Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The balance sheet of the National Broadcasting Service, presented to Parliament yesterday shows the accumulated fund at £557,552 of which £101,926 is loaned to the commercial service with interest at the rate of 4 per cent. Out of the revenue of £360,961, expenditure on programmes and programme staff was £122,426. The amount transferred to reserve was £115,905. Four private broadcasting stations were purchased during the year for £4,827, leaving two subsidised by the Government and two operated under contract. The capital expenditure included £29,273 for the Hawke’s Bay transmitting station and the Napier studio, and £23,405 for the Southland station. The sum of £11,514 was expended on the purchase of a Dunedin building whicli will be reconstructed as a studio and office. The commercial radio service shows £10,596 profit for the first time, reducing the total losses to £2,709. The fire at the Christchurch station caused losses of £6,670.
