COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS PEW SURPRISES FINALS ON THURSDAY I (Herald Correspondent.) The East Coast combined badminton club’* second annual championships are now in progress. Last week the initial rounds were played on the Te Puia court, and on Monday night a further stage was reached in Waipiro Bay. There are still many games left and players remaining will have difficulty in getting through the finals on Thursday night in Tokomaru Bay. The entries this year are nearly double those of last year, and the extra event, combined handicaps, has meant many more matches. In this event the handicapping is good, as the closeness of most of the games shows. At both Te Puia and Waipiro the home clubs acted as hosts and served welcome refreshments to the players and a large number of onlookers. Thompson in Form There have been one .or two setbacks in the games, but at. prdsettt few of the results'have caused much surprise. In the Men's Singles i 0. Thompson (Waipiro Bay) is the only player so far to have reached the semi-finals. Last year he won this event. In the Men’s Dbubles one semi-final has been played and there arc now left one Tokomaru pair, S. Lyle-Smythe and K. Oates, the holders, one Te Puia pair, and one Waipiro pair. As these three pairs are their own club’s top pairs some fast matches should be seen in the remaining semi-final and the final.
The Ladies’ Singles have not yet reached the semi-finals, although some games will be played in this section before Thursday. There are eight ladies left, Te Puia having six representatives and the otlyr two clubs one each. In the Ladies Doubles two Te Puia pairs play off for one semi-final and a Tokomaru pair plays a Waipiro pair for the other. in the Comibned Championships Hutton and Mrs. Hutton (Te Puia) had a narrow win over a Tokomaru pair, G. Knox and Mrs. Knox. This is so far the only game to be “set” and the Te Puia pair won 24—21. Of the remaining five pairs, Te Puia is represented by thTee and the other clubs one each. The Combined Handica produced many close games and two pairs have reached the semifinal. In this event Tokomaru has two pairs, Te Puia three and the remaining pair comprises a player from Waipiro with a Te Puia partner.
