STOKER FROM WARSHIP
USE OK PLYING BOAT
(Ter Tress Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. A dash to Great Barrier Island to bring a naval rating from H.M.S. Leander to the Auckland Hospital was made by a naval amphibian machine from tjhe Hobsonville air base yesterday morning. The rating, Herbert Cox, aged 19 years, a secondclass stoker aboard the Leander, was admitted to the hospitaL suffering from acute appendicitis. The Leander, which js undergoing exercises in the Hauraki Gulf, with the Achilles and the Leith, was near the island and the rating was put ashore. He was picked up there by the flying boat, which reached Hobsonville on the return journey shortly after 10 o'clock. An ambulance was waiting at the air base.
An operation was performed at .the hospital and the patient’s condition is reported as satisfactory.
