NO MORE COLOURS

I MAIN STREET LIGHTING

FESTOONS TO BE REMOVED

EXTENDING VAPOUR LAMPS

The coloured festoons in the main street lighting scheme are. to be removed from Gladstone road, as a result of a decision of the Gisborne Borough Council last night, when it was considered that their effect was now lost, following the installation of the mercury vapour lamps. No decision was reached regarding the proposal to extend the mercury vapour lamps to the Kaiti and Peel street bridges, it being stated that further information on the matter was being awaited from the Poverty Bay Electric-Power Board.

The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., said that the town, clerk, Mr. W. M. Jenkins, had made a suggestion at the previous meeting that the coloured lights were no longer required now that the mercury vapour lamps had been installed. Mr. Coleman said that for some time the picture houses had contributed towards the cost of keeping the coloured lights igoing on (Saturday nights, but had since withdrawn their subsidies. Centennial Proposal Cr. H. H. De Costa said that the festoon lights were a great acquisition. and. many people held the opinion that those lights should remain. Cr. R. Morse said he would like to see the coloured lights remain, at least until after the centennial celebrations. Cr. A. L. Singer believed that the coloured lights spoiled the effect of the mercury vapour lights. Cr. E. Harris .agreed that the effect of the coloured lights was now lost. Cr. J. H. Hall urged that the coloured lights should be 'erected at the beach end of Grey street. The Mayor pointed out that the Gisborne centennial celebrations would not be held until September next year, when the lights could be re-erected, if necessary. ; Old Type of Lights Cr. H. E. Maude urged that the old lights in the main street could be dispensed with. The town clerk said he had discussed the matter of the old suspension lamps with the Power Board engineer and found that from a financial point of view there would be very little saving, while there would be considerable 'expenditure in changing the suspension lights to a separate circuit. The council asked the town clerk to take the matter up further with che Power Board. In regard to the proposal to light the bridges with the mercury vapour lamps, Mr. Jenkins said he was waiting for further information from the Power Board.
