UAWA COUNTY COUNCIL

HOSPITAL LOAN OBJECTION OATES AND CATTLE STOPS PLANTATION RESERVE (Herald Correspondent ) The monthly meeting of the Uawa County Council was held on Monday, when there were present Crs. J. McNeil, chairman, A. Donald, D. H. Hawkins, A. H, Reeves, S. D. Reeves, C. E. Smith and P. T. Weeks.'

The commissioner of Crown lands, Gisborne, advised that the Mangatuna ICIC2 block was being transferred to the council as a plantation reserve.

The council decided to lodge an objection in regard to the Cook Hospital Board’s proposal to raise an additional loan of £9400 for nurses’ home additions. «

Advice was received from the Cook County Council giving support to an application for Government assistance in the repair of flood damage to the access road to section 2, block XIII, Uawa S.D. It was decided to ask the Cook Council what- it was prepared to pay for the maintenance of the road by the Uawa Council: ;

The P. and T. Department made a claim for damage to an underground cable.—lt was decided to object to any such claim.

Mr. W. A. Overy made suggestions regarding the creek that was giving trouble on Miller’s rfiad—The engineer was instructed to make an inspection and report.

The New Zealand Counties’ Association asked for particulars of rates and other matters for submission to the commission inquiring into the sheep farming industry.—The clerk was instructed to supply the information.

The committee appointed to deal with the Waihapua road gates and cattle stops submitted a report, and the clerk was authorised to have the application for gates and cattle stops put in order.

The county engineer was instructed to have a concrete culvert installed at the bottom of the old Tolaga Bay road. A tender from Smith and Monk, Limited, was accepted for filling approaches to the Mnngahcia Stream bridge.

The Public Works Department advised that application for a grant for formation and metalling of the apprhaches to the Mang'aheia Stream bridge would be treated as urgent. Engineer’s Report

“The continuation of fine weather has been a material help in bringing our roads up to a fair standard,” stated the county engineer. Mr. C. Percy. “In the Arakihi riding the West Ho road is badly in need of some reformation. Temporary work w'as carried out after last year's floods, (but work of a permanent character should be put in hand at an early date. Timber is now available for construction of the Kiore road bridge. This will be put in hand as soon as the men are available.

‘'Tauwhareparac Riding.—An inspection -was made recently of the Waih'apua road. The greatest difficulty is a bad wash-out jiu.it west of the small bridge. The country here is most unstable for road construction. In its present state it is too early to judge whether a road can Ibe formed over this slip, but the position is being carefully watched. Money from the PUblic Works Department is available for work on this road. I have pegged out two sites for the building of gates and cattle stops on this road. The cattle steps will (be built after certain formalities have -been complied with and when through access with material is available. The approaches to the Mangamana are a problem, and this portion, of the road is most difficult and expensive to keep open. A thorough investigation of this area will be carried out later. The side roads, Murphy’s, Tutamoe, Spencer’s and Huanui, are all in Tail-* order, although on the latter road heavy lorry traffic at a recent date and a most unreasonable time did considerable damage. The county would be wise to enforce traffic restrictions when conditions warrant it.

‘Mangaheia (Riding.—The contractors have completed their jc>b at the Mangaheia bridge. The Mangaheia static.’:! road will 'be put in order when conditions permit. 'When attempted a little while ago the ground was too -eft and wet for working. "'Mangatuna 'Riding.—On 'the Kaiaua road a small bridge close rto the recently erected one collapsed. It has been, demolished and replaced with a reinforced 'concrete (pipe culvert. The stream was slightly diverted, 'the old stream bed has been filled in, and a much improved road line has resulted. “Hauiti Riding.—The stream crossing the road at IMr. Hooper’s is likely to cause a wadi-cut under rainy conditions. A concrete crossing would be i 'sensible precaution. Attention also must be given to the outfall of this stream; on the road alignment it is 'couring brdly and should be protected. Manuka fascines would be cheap and practical. Some time ago the council decided to open up Mill road. Conditions are now favourable and a bulldozer is available. The work could ibe finished off with the county grader.

“Tolnga Riding.—(With Cr. Smith,-an inspection of suitable tree planting areas was made. Owing to work still being in hand at the Tolaga Bay bridge it was reluctantly decided ito wait until next season -before carrying out any planting iu that vicinity. However, a dozen trees were planted in -Solander street, and suitable .guards erected. There are still a few vacancies at the western end of this street. The county’s 'Half-acre section in the street has Ibcc-n planted with 300 gums. It would be advisable to prepare and plant a seedibed for the county’s future planting operations. "The erection of the quarrv plant at Parcmata is almost completed. Stone is being quarried in readiness for an early start.”
