GISBORNE BASKETBALL
CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY SCHOOL A TROUNCED C. GRADE COMPLETED One of the Poverty Bay Basketball Association's competitions was completed on Saturday afternoon, when the last series of matches were staged in the C grade. The title was annexed by St Mary’s Cl, with High School C as runners-up. St. Mary’s club representatives have had outstanding .success in the C grade of recent years and in 1938 they lifted the championship without losing game in the whole of the season s play.
High Sdi >o! A, who have shown brilliant form of late in the senior competition, received a .trouncing on Saturday at the hands of High School Old Girls’ leading team. The school side was without the services of two of its usual players, a goalie and centre, while a feature of Old Girls' play was the excellent shooting by the forwards.
Two playing Saturdays are required to complete the A grade competition, but the conclusion of the is some distance ahead as several other fixtures intervene. Next Saturday the St. Mary’s A and B teams will be in Rotorua for a Catholic tournament, while On September 1 and,. 2 the Poverty Bay representative A team will defend the Korungaituku Cup at the open Rotorua tournament. The return Robson Cup match with Wairoa is pected to take place early in September and the Marathon basketball club is to visit Opotiki on September 9. In view ot the school holidays arrangements could not be made for the Poverty. Bay second A grade representative team to travel to Te Araroa on Saturday as was planned.
