BRITISH AIR DEFENCE
THE VOLUNTEER RESERVE NEARING ESTABLISHMENT (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m. RUGBY, Aug. 15. A number of centres of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve are now approaching the establishment set them in the current expansion scheme. The question of raising the current establishment of the centres is, however, constantly under review. In several of the larger towns the number of applications for air sections in hand are sufficient to fill all immediate vacancies.
Several centres are training members of the following sections of the volunteer reserves: —Pilots, air observers, wireless operators, air gunners, skilled and semi-skilled tradesmen and aircraft hands. With all these sections fully functioning, it can be seen with what completeness the volunteer reserve is taking its place behind the regular air force.
A total of 541 recruits joined the Royal Air Force last week, bringing the total entry of pilots, observers and airmen boys since April 1 to 15,944, compared with 8083 in the corresponding period of 1938.
