AWARD TERMS SETTLED
BRICK AND TILE WORKERS CONCILIATION SUCCESS (Ter Press Aisocintion.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Conciliation Council met at Wellington yesterday to consider the brick, tile, pottery and clay workers’ dispute in Auckland, Wellington, Taranaki apd Nelson industrial districts and, after -a lengthy discussion in committee, complete agreement was reached at 5.15 p.m. The workers, in their demands, asked for 4d an hour increase in wages for adults, and 10s a week increase for youths. The employers offered a halfpenny an hour increase for adults on condition that the terms of the existing -award were agreed to.' This was eventually accepted by the assessors for the workers.
The following hourly rates of pay were agreed to: Flangers and moulders, 2s 9d; stickers 2s 7Ad: setters and drawers 2s 6Jd; quarrymen using explosives 2s GJd; burners 2s s£d; clay pit men 2s sd; all other workers, 2s sd. The employers could- not see their way to increase the wages of youths, -which are already regarded as too high. .. ' , The Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. S. Ritchie expressed pleasure that a complete agreement had been arrived at. It was some time, he said, since this had happened in the Conciliation Council -and it spoke well for the reasonable attitude adopted by both sides.
The new award came into force on August 14 and extends for one year.
