INCREASED PETROL TAX CONTRACTORS’ REQUESTS WAINUI BEACH SANITATION Meeting to-day, the Cook County Council resumed it sformer practice of holding its meetings on the third Wednesday of each month, following a brief trial on. the third Monday. Those present to-day were. —Crs. W. G. Sherratt, chairman, M‘. L. Holden, J. T. Gordon, G. V. Smith, C. Tietjen, M. T. B. Hall, E. H. Baker, H. G. Smith, P. D. Tombleson, and S. T. Gray.

Messrs. W. S. Goosman and Company, Limited, and Mr. 11. C. Juson asked for a revision Of their contracts in view of the increase of 4d per gallon in, the petrol tax. It was decided to defer the discussion, councillors wishing to know the Public Works Department's attitude on the matter of subsidies.

Mr. H. R. Shanks, Wainui Beach, wrote asking for the remission of the sanitary rate for he was not required Ao ‘ use the sanitary service, because a sceptic tank had been installed.—The : county clerk, Mr. F. T. Robinson, reported that fill land was subject to the rate. The matter of whether sceptic tanks were to be permitted on Wainui Beach was the subject of a report to be submitted at the next meeting by the Medical Officer of Health, Dr. L. S. Davis. Consideration of the letter was deferred until the medical officer’s repbrt came to hand.

The Main Highways Board advised that it was ’ unable to assist financially with the proposal to construct a footpath in front of the Ormond Hotel, as the work did not come within the scope of the board's usual standard for subsidy. The Uawa County Council advised that it was prepared to pay £SO per annum to the Cook County for the maintenance of that portion of jhe Puatai road that was in the Uawa County.—The offer was accepted. Mr. Geb. Coop wrote thanking the council for the progress of metalling on the Tarewa road, and offering £IOO, provided the council found £IOO and the amounts were subsidised by the Public Works Department, for the continuation of the work.—-It was reported that provision had been made on the estimates for the work, and it was decided to thank Mr. Coop for his offer.

Mr. N. G. Bolitho forwarded a request for the grading and metalling of the Bushmere road to his homestead gate.—lt was agreed, to do the work during the summer, subject to a grant being made available. Tile No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority -wrote refusing to grant a license for the cartage of gravel on back-loading to the J. T. Hill Timber and Construction Company, adding that the postmasters had authority to gran* temporary licenses. —It was de* cided to make application to the chief postmaster at Gisborne for a temporary license. Tiie county ranger, Mr. E. A. Cameron, reported having seized 390 head of stock for impounding during the month ended August 12.
