CONTRACT LET

WAIROA DENTAL CLINIC EXTENSION TO BE BUILT SECOND NURSE COMING (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. A contract has been, let by the Hawke's Bay Education Board for the carrying out of extensions to tne dental clinic at the Wairoa District High School, and it is anticipated that a start shortly will be made with the work. When the extensions have been completed a second 1 dental nurse will be appointed to this district. The tender has been let to Messrs. Sharpe and Telford, Wairoa. The future activities in connection with the clinic were explained by the secretary oi the clinic committee, Mr S. M. Ashburn, at a dance which was held at the Taihoa Hall, North Clyde, to assist to raise the town district's quota of the cost. The dance had been arranged by the natives and 1 proved to be a great success. There was an excellent attendance of both Maoris and Europeans and as a result the fW|d will greatly benefit. i

Speaking during the supper interval, Mr. Ashburn outlined the objects of the gathering and also the difficulties experienced by the dental clinic committee in carrying out its work in the past, more especially in dealing with the. increasing number 01 new entrants following on the readmission of the five-year-olds to the school.

However, next month, he hoped, would see the clinic extended and a second purse installed. A start wouic. be made then in treating the 400 new entrants from the schools in the district.

A feature Of the evening, said the ..speaker, wno apologised for the ab- ’ sence of the chairman of the school committee, Mr. R. W. Goodley, was the presence of the first dental nurse in Wairoa, Mrs. R. W. Hawthorne, and the present nurse, Miss Henry. He expressed his thanks to the natives for their splendid effort and also to Mr. S. Paku, Mrs. Webber, Mr Honty Jury and his orchestra, and Mr. W. McGregor and Mr. D. McGregor for placing the hall at the disposal of the organisers. During the evening items were given by two Maori girls and others. Mr. S. Hanckesman was the winner of the competition.
