CONCERN EXPRESSED

WAIROA COUNCIL’S ACTION

ELECTRIC SUPPLY SYSTEM

POSSIBILITY OF DAMAGE

(Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day

The decision of the Wairoa Borough Council not to install a Kelman oil circuit breaker on its supply system was the subject of some criticism by the board’s engineer at the monthly meeting of the Wairoa Elec-tric-Power Board yesterday. Advice was received from the Borough Council to the affect that it was of the opinion that the expense of installing the oil circuit breaker on its supply system was not warranted in the meantime. Referring fo the council’s decision the engineer, Mr. C. J. P. Drewitt, reported that he would recommend that they reconsider the matter. The board's switch was installed solely for the protection of its mains and transformer and iie wished to place it on record that the board, and himself. accepted no responsibility or risk whatever for happenings beyond the Borough receiving station. The position, stated the engineer, was that the transformer capacity had been raised to 1250 K.V.A. and the board was entitled to sot this switch to automatically open under a total load of 2500 K.V.A. three phase, or 833 K.V.A. on any individual phase, although he was at present running on a setting considerably below the 100 per cent mark. "The board,’’ added the engineer, “will realise that considerable damage could happen should a fault occur before this switch opened, but that, as mentioned before, this is purely a borough concern and no responsibility'of the board’s.” In connection with the suggested oil break switch for the borough, the usual practice was for the consumer to erect such a switch set at 50 per cent, or even 25 per cent, above the recorded peak load. “This is one of jhose things which should he done.” said Mi'. J. R. Gillespie.

On the motion of the chairman, Mr. C. V. Chamberlain, seconded by Mr. T. Davey, if was decided lo refer Hie engineer's report to the Borough Council for further consideration.
