NEGLIGENT MOTORIST DETERRENT SENTENCE (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, this day. “There are your interests and the public interest to consider and the public interest is paramount. The sentence must be one that will act as a deterrent to show clearly that the courts will not tolerate conduct which leads to the slaughter of citizens.
“On the charge of negligently driving a motor vehicle causing death, you will be sentenced to six months’ hajd labour and for failing to . stop alter an accident, you will be sentenced to two months’ hard labour, the sentences to be concurrent. Your license will be suspended and you will be prohibited from driving for 10 years.”
With these words, Mr. Justice Smith passed sentence in the Supreme Court this morning on Charles Archibald Riseley, aged 2G years, who pleaded guilty in the Lower Court to a charge of negligent driving on August 5, thereby causing the death of Arthur Sydney Harper and also to failing to stop -after* an accident involving injury.
