A statement issued toy the Japanese army headquarters at Tientsin accuses the British of deliberately hampering the progress of the Tokio talks until the Russian pact is concluded. The statement hints at further anti-British measures unless “tricky Britain’’ replies yes or no to 'the Japanese demands.
The British Embassy in Tokio today issued a statement denying that the Government was deliberately delaying the dispatch of fresh instructions from London. It was explained that the issues were complex, requiring numerous 'consultations.
An Independent 'Cable Service message from Pekin states that the latest Japanese anti-British move was to-day heralded by the arrival of Mr. Watanalbe, a prominent member of the Tokio Social Mass Party, who ife’ conferring with the Japanese at Pekin and has redeclared the intention of organising an international anti-British movement throughout China, Japan and IManchukuo.
Handing Chinese Over
The .British Foreign Office to-day announced that the authorities in China were 'handing over the four Chinese wanted toy the Japanese for trial on charges of murder at Tientsin.
Miss (Margery Pry, the honorary secretary o'f the Howard League for Penal Reform, has instructed counsel to apply for a habeas corpus in respect to the four surrendered Chinese at Tientsin. . .
Messages from Chungking state that the Chinese are reported to be moving westward towards the ShanghaiHankow railway and threaten Kashing and Kashang and also points between Shanghai and Hangchow.
Reports from (Hong Kong state that the Japanese are rushing reinforcements to Shansi to check the Chinese advance, which has cut oil two divisions. Chinese offensives are progressing in the Honan and Hupeh areas, Where a number of strategic towns were captured. 'Guerillas are active at Pootung.
