BEER DUTY INCREASE
BREWERS PASS IT GIT WHOLESALE RATES RISING Distributors cf beer in Gisborne have been advilsed cf a decision, taken by the brewing firms, to pass on to them in the form of increased wholesale prices the recent rise in the excise duty en their product. Beer in .bulk wili carry the Gd per gallon extra impost, and bottled beer will be rated wholesale at Is 2d per dozen quarts above the price ruling until this week. Pints and nip sizes will be raised in proportion. Distributors have not yet determined what action they will take to recoup themselves for the additional wholesale outlay. It is probable that they will rVch a decision to-morrow, When definite advice is received of the Auckland brewers’ attitude. A Press Association telegram received to-day indicated that the Auckland brewens were adopting the same scale increases for wholesale supplies as were the manufacturers of beer in other parts of the Dominion, but no communication cn the point had been received by importers here. So far as hotelkeepers are concerned, no immediate steps will be taken to pass on the additional duly. The licensed victuallers in Gisborne are waiting for a lead from their Dominion organisation, as there are alternative means of adjusting the price increase, and uniformity of action is desired.
