TORPEDO-BOATS

CONSTRUCTION IN SYDNEY TYPE APPROVED CANBERRA, Aug. 3. The Commonwealth Government has approved the type of the first motor torpedo boats to be constructed in Australia. The first six of the 12 boats to be built at Cockatoo Island dockyards will have a speed of not less than 42 knots, they will be armed with torpedoes and anti-aircraft guns, and will be 70ft.. long. The Minister for Defence, Mr. Street, said to-night that preliminary work for the construction of the boats had been undertaken by the Cockatoo Dock and Engineering Company. Mr. Street said last week that it was expected that the full quota of 12 boats would be completed as originally planned before June, 1941. The specifications given indicate that the type selected is the Scott-Paine torpedo boat.
