SPECTACULAR BOUTS

TO-MORROW’S WRESTLING BRITISH EMPIRE CHAMPION SPECIAL AMATEUR TRIAL Followers of wrestling in this district expect to see some spectacular contests at the tournament organised by the Gisborne Wrestling Association, and set down for to-morrow evening.

The main attraction, of course, will be the meeting of Earl McCready, British Empire heavyweight professional champion, and Rollend Kirchnteyer, a former Olympic representative from the United States, who has since climbed into the most popular group of professionals. The rest of the programme, however, promises excellent entertainment, too. and if expectations are realised, the association should have a thoroughly satisfactory night. There is no occasion to extol the successes of McCready in the wrestling game. His past performances in Gisborne were good enough to guarantee him a good house any time he comes here. Kirchmeyer has not appeared in Gisborne before, but he comes well recommended, and is regarded as the best opponent for McCready available in the Dominion, except, of course, “Lofty’’ Blomfield and perhaps the newcomer Prince Bhu Pinder.

• The meeting of H. Duckworth and Arthur Read in a special five-round amateur contest may solve definitely a question much argued among patrons of the game here. Read has developed an individual technique in which he exploits his gift for clowning, and Duckworth is a serious wrestler who takes his bouts gravely, ;n strong contrast to the attitude of his opponent. Both are strong and skilled, and if Read and Duckworth arc both in form, the bout should be worth going a long way to see. Several minor amateur bouts assist in building up a strong programme Owing to I. Bell not being available for his match with R. Third, the committee has called upon the services of Pritchard and “Tex” Thompson, previously nominated as emergencies.
