OBITUARY

The head of a family whose connection with Auckland dates from t'he cilly'.s earliest years, Captain Joseph Hodgson, died in Auckland at the age of 91. Born at a house in Swanson street, Captain Hodgson lived at Parnell for the' greater part of his life, and traded between Auckland and the north for very many years as master of his ov/n vessels. Formerly sub-manager of the Wellington branch of <the Bank of New South Wales, Mr. Alexander Paul died suddenly on Saturday in Wellington at the age of 75. Mr. Paul, berore his retirement in 1929, had 51 years of service with the bank. The death has occurred of Mrs. Annie Rhodes, aged 81, the widow of Mr. Charles Rhodes, a former managing director of the New Zealand Mines Trust and the Waihi Gold Mining Company and a founder of the Auckland Rotary Club. The death has occurred in Wellington of Mrs. J. P. Firth, whose husband was for many years headmaster of Wellington College. Mrs. Firth was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N. Mcßae, and granddaughter of Mr. G. Mcßae, who settled in Nelson in 1842. She was born at Benopai station, Marlborough, but moved to Nelson when a young girl. Later the family moved to Christchurch, where Mrs. Firth was married in 1889. In 1892 Mr. and Mrs. Firth went to Wellington, where Mr. Firth took up the headmastership of Wellington College, a position he held until about 1922.
